Naughty Nautical Blue Look

Monday, June 30, 2008

The other day I was playing with my Naughty Nautical pigments and came up with this look. I only did one eye and then took it off, because honestly, I didn't really like it. It was just too bright for me. I think slightly toned down and I probably would have liked it better. It may be that I wasn't used to seeing myself in such a bold look, since I'm used to simple, softer ones.

I only took a few photos because I didn't plan on posting it, but I thought I would anyway. I'd like to mention that I love my lashes in these pics! They have a little blue on them at the end because I touched up on the pigment and didn't reswipe with mascara. I used Volume Couture for the first time with this look and I love it!! I think I should just stick with Max Factor, because it's the only brand I've had success with. I may switch from my Lash Perfection to this, possibly my new Holy Grail mascara!

What I used:
* Revlon Creme Shadow (base)
* MAC pigment in Mutiny (inner)
* MAC pigment in Bell-bottom Blue (outer)
* MAC pigment in Lark About (crease & highlight)
* Max Factor eyeliner in Jean Jacket (top & bottom liner)
* Max Factor Volume Couture waterproof mascara

Review: Monave Skincare and Brushes

Thursday, June 26, 2008

In addition to the foundation and other makeup, I was able to test several Monave skincare products as well as some of their makeup brushes. It took me a while to do this review so I could give each product a fair trial and make sure it didn't cause any breakouts.

To start, I'll first review the skincare items. Monave have a range of natural products from cleansers to moisturizers. All the ingredients are naturally derived. There are absolutely no harsh chemicals. Also, there products are only exposed to heat if necessary. If heat is needed, products will be exposed at the lowest temperatures and in small batches. This process makes for fresh and high quality products.

Honey-Clay Cleanser
This cleanser is intended for those with the most sensitive skin as it contains no soap. As implied by the name, it is made with honey and clay. The cleanser itself has a syrup like consistency. It has a slight honey scent along with another familiar scent that I can't quite name. It's not a bad scent, but I could do without it. After using this cleanser, my face felt clean and wasn't left dry. My only issue with this was that it doesn't soap up (but remember, it doesn't contain any soap to begin with). It kind of feels like your just rubbing syrup on your face. Perhaps it's just something I'm not used to. Even though, it didn't turn soapy, it still removed my makeup and left my face feeling clean. However, this product is actually a dual-product because you can also use it as mask. I think I prefer this as a mask. Once it slightly dries and you remove it, I feel like it's pulling out all the impurities out of my skin. Being made with honey & clay, I was reminded of a day in the spa and expensive facials. I think this is pretty good product for those who want spa days in the comfort of your own home. A full-size 2 oz jar is only $15 and comes with plenty of uses.

Green Clay Facial Cleansing Bar
Unlike the Honey-Clay Cleanser, this little bar will lather and turn soapy for you! To me, the soapiness makes me feel like the cleanser is doing its job. This bar is meant for those with a oilier skin and acne. I have a bit of combination skin, and after using this, I feel like the oils in my t-zone have lessened. Although I prefer liquid cleansers, I find this bar to be a nice basic, gentle cleanser. Now, I've also given this bar for my sister to try and she has a more oily complexion than I do and more prone to acne. She's commented that she feels like her face has noticeably less oil and helped with her acne. I think it's safe to say that this bar is great and effective with oily complexions. And if you're in the market for a plain, no frills cleanser, I'd recommend you give this a try for $5 a bar.

Rose Facial Toner
I've heard so many great things about rose water for skincare. But rose water is a hard to come by! I've searched high and low for rose water products and it's definitely not in drugstores. I finally came across Ruben Remedies Rose Water Toner that I purchased at Marshalls and I like it, but they don't keep it in stock and I'm running low. So, I was excited to try this Rose Facial Toner. Let me say how good this smells! If you don't like floral scents, you may want to stray away, but I love the scent of rose. It just smells clean and fresh. The Rose Facial Toner comes in a glass spray bottle and you just mist some on your face. You can use it like a regular toner and grab a cotton pad, orr you can use it a hydrating moisturizer. It's so refreshing and light! I've been using a little squirt before I apply my foundation and I love it for keeping my face hydrated (which has been a little dry lately). If you're interested in rose water, I say try this for $13.50 a bottle. You might consider it pricey, but realize making rose water is a time consuming distillation process and to me, well worth it.

Rose Daily Moisture Cream
Again, I'm just a fan of rose water so I really like this cream! It has that floral rose scent and it made with all natural ingredients. It contains shea butter, vitamin E, jojoba oil, and several other moisturizing ingredients. I've been using this in place of my morning moisturizer and so far, so good! Keeps my skin hydrated and doesn't break me out. The only flaw I see is that I don't believe it contains any SPF. But since I wear SPF 45 sunscreen anyway, I don't see it as huge issue. You could use this as a nighttime moisturizer instead, but I'm partial to my Nivea Creme. My previous morning moisturizer (Olay) is more of a liquid lotion and I prefer this type of cream. It just feels like it's sinking better. This was definitely one of my favorite products of the bunch. A full-size 1 oz jar is only $10.

Gentle Honey Bamboo Facial Polish
This reminds of the Honey-Clay cleanser as they share the same scent. The scrub does have a much thicker consistency though. It contains crushed bamboo to slough off dead skin and increase cell turnover. So, I kind of used this as a mask and let it set for 5-10 minutes. Then, I exfoliated as I washed it off. My face did feel softer and refreshed, but I think the scrub would have been more effective had the bamboo been more fine and grainy. I had rather large visible chunks of bamboo and made it difficult to exfoliate with. I've been doing aspirin masks for a while and in comparison, it just doesn't exfoliate as well. However, the aspirin mask does tend to dry out my face, while this doesn't. The polish is much more gentle and does not over strip my face like the aspirin mask can. If your skin is extremely sensitive, this might be a better option for you for $15 per 2 oz jar.

Organic Rosemary Hair Tonic
This spray is for dry, brittle strands and perfect for the summer. It instantly hydrates and conditions your hair. Heat styling obviously damages and dries your locks. So, I sprayed it after I blow dried my hair and seemed like my hair feels a little softer and silkier. It has a light scent and essentially rosemary infused water. Just being infused water, it's very lightweight and not a heavy serum. It might have even brought out a little shine in my hair too. If your hair is constantly in the sun and feeling dry, give it a quick mist for a moisture boost. Personally, I don't like the feeling of serums or heavy leave-in conditioners and this makes for a great alternative. Slightly pricey at $15 a bottle, but much cheaper than professional salon care products like Ojon.

I've also tried a couple Monave makeup brushes. They're currently transitioning to synthetic brushes. This is really great for those who are vegan and I prefer synthetic sometimes because they can be so much softer! These brushes are all short-handled and convenient for travel.

Mini Bronzer Brush
I have the new synthetic brush, as well as their previous natural one. The natural one is not super soft, but soft enough to still use (some natural brushes can be scratchy). The synthetic one is much more dense and softer feeling. They both have pretty good pick up, but since the synthetic one is denser, it grabs a little more. I prefer the vegan one just because it's softer and does a better job of blending. They remind me more of flat-top brushes for foundation, but can still be used for bronzer. I think they're great for contouring around the jawline or dusting a little highlighter on your forehead and nose. The natural one sheds a bit, but the synthetic hasn't at all. Since they are changing to vegan brushes, the natural one is no longer available. The synthetic brush is only $12.

Flat-top Foundation Brush
This is similar to the Everyday Mineral Flat-top brush in size. It's super soft and bit denser than the EDM, which is great for heavier MMU coverage. Being quite dense, it does an awesome job of buffing and blending mineral foundation. It also makes for applying mineral foundation wet much easier and allows for even application. The bristle are so incredibly soft! It has not shed at all despite being washed a few times already. The handle seems sturdy and bristles tightly bound. In my opinion, I think this brush is maybe slightly softer than the EDM. They are smiliar, but not exactly the same. I'd use them for different purposes, one heavier coverage and the other for lighter. For $18, it's a little more than I'd like to spend but a good brush otherwise.

Blush Brush
Like the other brushes, the bristles are extremely soft and non-shed. It's a not angled and a bit smaller in diameter than my other blush brushes. It has good pick up, applies blush evenly, and blends well. Since it is slightly smaller, it excellent for contouring right under the apples of your cheeks and around your nose. Plus, the small size is convenient to take in your purse for touch ups. It quickly became one of my favorite brushes, especially since I love face colors. I use it for blush, contouring, and highlighting. For $15, it's much more affordable than a MAC brush.

Review: Spinlash

Wednesday, June 25, 2008

I was recently given a Spinlash to try. Spinlash is a mascara with a battery operated rotating brush. The brush can rotate in either direction for upper and lower lashes. The rotating brush removes clumps as it coats, lengthens, and volumizes your lashes.

Now, at first I thought it was combing tool for your lashes. It's actually a mascara and you're supposed to dispose of it after 3 months like a regular mascara or when the battery dies. What confused me is that the package says "Free Mascara Included." That to me, made it seem like you're getting a combing tool/brush and they're just giving a mascara to use it with, if you'd like. It also says you can use it with your own mascara, making it even more so like a tool rather than an actual mascara. Well, no, it's not a tool. Spinlash is a mascara with a unique wand and like other mascaras you're supposed to "Discard within 90 days" as inscripted on handle. If you're thinking why not just keep it and use it as a tool, you should know that the battery is permanently encased and cannot be replaced or removed! So, don't be fooled into thinking it's a reusable mascara comb.

The mascara it comes with acts as a cap for the brush. If you're going to use it with your own mascara, make sure to wipe off the mascara from the cap. The mascara it comes with is nothing special in particular. It's non-waterproof and therefore didn't hold my curl. It's just your average mascara. You're probably better off just using your own favorite brand of mascara.

The brush itself is one of those plastic bristle ones like Maybelline Define-a-lash or Max Factor Lash Perfection, which I kind of prefer. The brush rotates very slowly. You really shouldn't be worried about poking your eye or anything. It's slow and seems very safe to use. It rotates 360 degrees in either direction. It's a single button that controls the rotation, with two arrows facing opposite directions. The simple design makes Spinlash easy to use. But since it is battery operated, the Spinlash is a bit heavy and slightly bulky to travel with.

There are 2 ways you can use your own mascara. One way is to use your own mascara normally and then use the Spinlash to comb out any clumps. The other is to dip the Spinlash brush into your chosen mascara and then use Spinlash to apply it. Depending on your tube and the way Spinlash is designed, the brush may not fit in it. Don't try to force it into smaller tubes because it will get stuck (happened to me, kind of broke it, but then I fixed it). I've tried Spinlash in both ways and I prefer to dip it into my own mascara.

I used Max Factor Lash Perfection with the Spinlash and I absolutely loved the results! I am a overcoater, so I always get clumps and lashes that stick together. This has turned me into an obsessive comber! And combing always takes up time. With the Spinlash, I don't get clumps or stuck together lashes and tons of time has been cut down. It does a super fantastic job of coating each individual lash and keeping them separate. It gives me fluffy, individual, clump-free lashes. I am thrilled with Spinlash using my own mascara.

However, the only downside for me is price at $15! The fact I have to throw this fairly large sized tool out after 3 months seems like such a waste and makes for an extremely pricey mascara. Considering, I don't even use the mascara it comes with, spending $15 tri-monthly for a comb is out of my budget since I'd have to pay another $7 for my own mascara too. It's not just the price alone, but the design of an irreplaceable battery that is the major flaw of Spinlash. Honestly, if that battery could be replaced, I'd say splurge and get one because I love the results with it

If you can afford to try it, then go for it! I'd recommend that you use your own mascara though. Otherwise, the price may be too steep for the rest of us living on a budget.

Q&A and Beauty Travel Tips

Tuesday, June 17, 2008

Reader questions answered...

Q1: What country are you from?

A1: Born and raised in US, but I'm of Korean descent. I'm not sure which you meant.

Q2: Will you be making YouTube videos?

A2: Quite possibly. YouTube has much larger scale audience than blogging and I'm bit hesitant to be honest, lol. But maybe!

Q3: Why is Monave international shipping so expensive?

A3: I contacted Monave and was told that shipping is directly calculated by USPS and not something they do themselves. And I have to say, int'l shipping is expensive especially with increased gas prices. USPS First-class int'l is cheap but doesn't offer insurance or tracking. For an extra $10.80 on top of postage, it can be registered, which still doesn't provide tracking and limited insurance up to $45.51 coverage. Only Priority and Express int'l include insurance and tracking. Priority is only a few dollars more than First-class with registration. So, for the couple extra bucks, you'll get the package delivered faster, with tracking, and insurance.

Moving on!

I won't be blogging for a few days as I'm traveling somewhere for a few days. If you haven't traveled by plane in a while (like me), there are tons of new rules and regulations due to homeland security. One specific rule for carry-ons is 3-1-1 for domestic flights.

* 3: Liquid, cream, gel, or aerosol must be in a 3 oz container or smaller.
* 1: Those items must be put inside a 1 quart zipper top bag.
* 1: Only 1 quart bag per person.

If you want to have more than that, you must check your bag! With sky high gas prices, there are now fees to check your bags. For short travel, carry-on is just much more convenient and the 3-1-1 rule is not realistic for a girl with makeup needs. Clearly, TSA and National Security are headed by men because no woman would create this bastard of a 3-1-1 rule. Exceptions are medications, eye drops, and anything medical related. These items can brought in excess of 3 oz, but they must be x-rayed and/or examined by airport security.

I had the hardest time packing everything in smaller containers. I need makeup remover, moisturizer (AM & PM), sunscreen, toothpaste, shampoo, body wash, and hand sanitizer. Plus mascara and ligloss (not lipstick though) count as liquids! They have to go in your quart size bag. And at first, I thought a quart size bag was one of those giant freezer type bags. NO. It's like a smidge bigger than your average sandwich bag. Let me just say, my bag is about to burst and I don't even have everything I need in it yet!! I haven't put in toner or face wash yet. I'm thinking about skipping toner and buying some of those Ponds towelettes instead. I have slightly big bottle of hand sanitizer and I think I'm going buy a smaller one since it's taking up so much room. Also, I have a little spray bottle with Clorox Any Surface sanitizing cleaner, lol. This is for the shower, toilet, and doorknobs.

Note, you are permitted to carry-on blow dryers and flat & curling irons. I actually didn't see anything on the TSA site about that stuff so I called them to ask. After I asked, the rep put me on hold and came back said, "Are these electrical or fueled by butane?" Apparently, there are such things as butane fueled blow dryers such. Who knew!

Also, when traveling, glance at your airline's contract of carriage. It will show the airline's policy regarding delayed or canceled flights. It may be that they book you on the next available flight, even if it's not on their airline. They may have to compensate you or provide overnight accommodations. Policies will vary from airline to airline, so make sure to check your specific airline. I mean, delayed and canceled flights are inevitable. As a passenger, you're entitled to your rights as outlined in the contract of carriage and it's unlikely that the airline will inform you of them. It's just best to know them and be prepared. Here's a link to an article I found about tips to travel cheap too.

How to: Enhance Eyes

Friday, June 13, 2008

The wonderful thing about makeup is that a little goes a long way. It's very easy to enhance your eyes with just a small amount of effort. One thing I do always even if I don't wear foundation is curl my lashes. I even carry a curler with me in my bag. Curling your lashes can open up your eyes instantly and I recommend doing so at the very minimum of your daily beauty routine.

This is how I enhance my eyes:

* I use a neutral shade over the lid and highlight the brow bone. One of my favorite neutral colors to use is pink. I'm not talking like bright, hot pink but a golden pink with a hint of brown tone. It's just enough color to be noticeable but soft enough to look very natural. Shadow also gives my monolids more depth.

* I line my top lash and slightly wing it out. The wing creates the illusion of a bigger eye. I use black, brown, or navy on the top and any color except black to line on the bottom. I think black is just too bold for the bottom. I usually use shadow to line the bottom because it's soft. Lining your eye gives it definition and a distinct shape. But don't try to connect the top and bottom. Leaving it unconnected opens up and widens the eye.

* I use a shimmery white pencil for my inner corner. It brightens up the eye, making you look fresh and alert. It's like an instant pick me up.

* I curl my lashes. Again, curling makes such an impact. It makes your eye rounder and more feminine. I also use mascara on top and bottom. You could even put on a false pair of lashes.

Pretty simple right? It can be done in less than 10 minutes. It's quick & easy and I think it makes a big difference. Hopefully you'll be able to see the difference in the pictures below. Sorry if I look a little cross-eyed, lol. These were taken in natural lighting without any flash.

What I used:
* Revlon Creme Shadow (dark pink shade as base)
* Painted Laydies pigment in Tramp (lid)
* Painted Laydies pigment in Ice Cappucino (highlight)
* L'oreal HiP eyeliner in Midnight Blue (top liner)
* Painted Laydies pigment in Morrigan (bottom liner)
* N.Y.C. Highlighter pencil in Miss Sparkle (inner corner)
* Max Factor Lash Perfection Waterproof mascara

It's Official...

I'm going on a shopping ban!

I have more than enough makeup to sustain me for years. As someone who doesn't wear makeup everyday, it is strangely odd that I keep buying more when I absolutely do not need it. I believe the term is called addict. I also do not need other materialistic items regardless of how much I fancy it. As of this moment, buying anything that is not a necessity is considered a luxury. Retail therapy is no exception.

I don't want to be a makeup collector. I want to be a makeup lover and enthusiast. Owning lots of it doesn't make me one, but enjoying and using it does. So, I'm going to start thoroughly utilizing what I have because I am not a collector! I'm an enthusiast!

I will still be blogging and perhaps less frequently (but of course, I'll still visit others). There probably won't be any hauls, except from what I've already purchased before the ban. Hopefully, this will also give me incentive to do more looks/FOTDs and maybe do tutorials :)

Shopping ban is in effect today until further notice and I have yet to determine when it ends.

Review: PeaceKeeper Cause-metics

Wednesday, June 4, 2008

PeaceKeeper Cause-metics is not just another natural mineral makeup company. They are the first cosmetics line to donate all their after tax profits to women's health advocacy and urgent human rights issues. Their approach is unique as they use our consumer buying power to raise funds and awareness. With a purchase, you make a direct contribution to helping women around the world. Finally, have your cake and eat it too with the help of PeaceKeeper. Please check out the video below for more information about PeaceKeeper Cause-metics.

I have an all natural, lipstick in Paint Me Healed. It applies creamy and is extremely moisturizing as it contains shea butter and jojoba oil. I even had slightly chapped lips and the moisturizing formula healed some of it. I've never tried mineral lipstick and I was thinking it might not be so pigmented, but this is very pigmented! The color is very vibrant and surprisingly long lasting. There is no scent or flavor, which I prefer in a lipstick. Paint Me Healed is a gorgeous matte coral shade. The color looked dark, but applies a bit lighter than it appears. PeaceKeeper offers a total of 12 beautiful shades to choose from for $16.50 each.

I also have a mineral lip gloss in Eternal Equity, named after an organization PeaceKeeper donates to. It comes in a standard tube with a doe-foot applicator. This gloss is completely non-sticky, which I absolutely love! You can apply it liberally and it will never feel sticky. It has a very slick and creamy texture. Similar to the lipstick, it's made with moisturizing ingredients and kept my lips hydrated. The gloss has light sweet vanilla, sugar cookie essence scent with no flavor. It's not very pigmented, but just enough to leave a noticeable amount of color. The formula itself makes for a shiny gloss, but it also contains a subtle shimmer. Eternal Equity is a deep pink, mauve shade with gold shimmer. I've now tried several mineral glosses and I have to say that I really like the formulas, because they provide non-sticky shine. At $16.50 each, you'll be making a helpful contribution as well giving your lips some much deserved loving.

PeaceKeeper even has a lip balm, called Eco-Sensual. It's not just your average chapstick. It's 100% natural, 100% vegan, and 73% organic! It comes in a standard twisty tube, which I like. Lately, I've noticed balms come in jars and I just don't like using my finger for it. Plus, sticks are smaller and take up less room in my already crowded purse. It glides on to keep your lips thoroughly moisturized and chap-free. It has a slightly methylated feeling because it contains spearmint oil. It actually feels refreshing! I don't know how to describe it. It's just very soothing. The scent reminds of Wrigley's chewing gum because of the spearmint, but it's very mild. If you have severe dried lips, this should heal 'em right up! This is a Self Magazine reader favorite product, so you know it's gotta be good. Snatch some up for only $3.18 for a stick!

Lastly, they even have natural nail polish! These are mineral based lacquers that are densely nutritious with amino acids for healthy nails. They apply creamy and smooth. They dry fairly quickly and so far have minimal chipping. My shade in Paint Me Forgiving looks like dark pink, mauve with shimmer in the bottle. When applied, it's more of a light pink, nude shade with shimmer. It reminds me of the word "seashell," just a pretty nudy pink. It may be my particular shade, but you might have to do a few coats to get the color to show. Mind you, I naturally have very white tips so I always have to do extra coats. Also, in the picture, I quickly did 2 thin coats and if you don't have very white tips like me, the color should be decently pigmented for you. These nontoxic, vegan friend nail colors are available for $12 a bottle.

I urge you to check PeaceKeeper Cause-metics out! Not only are their all natural products great, their mission to do goodwill is even better. Please support PeaceKeeper Cause-metics, make a contribution, and spread the word!
